The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

A book about finding a place in society, The House on Mango Street is one of my favorites now.  Instead of a fluid story, the book is a series of small diary entries that ultimately tie into a whole theme.  Originally, I didn’t think I’d enjoy this book as it was for school, but the story of Esperanza was one that me and many others can surely relate to.  I would definitely recommend it!
 

Whatshisface by Gordon Korman

This was a very interesting and well-written book. Gordon Korman is one of my personal favorite authors because he always twists two genres of books into one book. This book turned a very historical event into an unimaginable twist. It had lessons of friendship, trust, etc. along the way, which also put a meaningful reason to read this book.

Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman by Haruki Murakami

Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman is a collection of short stories ranging on a variety of topics. Thought provoking and relatable, though at times a bit abstract. BWSW contains many memorable quotes that stick with the reader long after he or she has finished the book. The stories can be read individually or all together. My personal favorite story was Birthday Girl; however, several other stories are also popular. BWSW is an interesting read that people from all walks of life can enjoy.

Snow by Ann Beattie

"Snow" is  a two-page story about a nameless woman remembering when she was in a relationship with an also nameless man.  Written as though the woman is talking to her ex, the story is full of incredible symbolism.  It's bittersweet, but fun to read.  I would highly recommend it!

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien

This book was a phenomenal portrayal of the Vietnam War.  It is composed of vignettes that give the reader insight to the war's experiences.  I was surprised that a story about a war could be so interesting--I would definitely recommend this book!

Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams by Sylvia Plath

Although Plath's writing was as paranormal, flawless, and as engaging as normal the order in which her selections were placed was awkward and made little sense with seemingly unrelated essays, short stories, and journal entries thrown together, making the book unreadable as a whole. However, each individual entry was superb and I enjoyed each with no dependence on the subject matter as Plath can make a topic to read about. Rating: 3 out of 5
