The Woman With a Worm in Her Head and Other True Stories of Infectious Disease by Pamela Nagami

 

Nagami recounts several memorable events that have happened while diagnosing and caring for patients, and although it’s a nonfiction and scientific novel, it’s just as riveting as any fiction or even fantasy book.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

 

I thought this book was amazing. The way it was written was very nice. Even though it was a very awful story (not badly written, just sad that it happened in real life), it was way better written than any true crime or nonfiction I’ve read.

The Student Leadership Challenge by James S. Kouzes

 

I liked this book and I recommend it to anyone struggling with a leadership position. It talks about 10 strategies that you can use to improve your leadership skills and your impression to your peers as a leader. I liked this book because it had strategies that worked, but the examples in the book were very unrelatable.

The Wordhord: Daily Life in Old English by Hana Videen

 

The Wordhord is about the Old English language/Old Norse language.  I really enjoyed this book because ancient languages are fascinating.  Though the book isn't intended specifically for teens, I extremely enjoyed it.

The Iron Sea by Simon Read

It's about the war at sea between the Allies and Hitler's warships.  The book can be confusing at times but it is very interesting and captivating.

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom

Corrie ten Boom has always had a love for others in her heart. But it will be tested in The Hiding Place, a thrilling true story set during the Holocaust in the Netherlands. Corrie and her family must hide multiple Jews in their little house, the Béjé. They are the center of an underground movement. What will happen when the inspectors come?

The story, while not exactly happy, sucks you in and is impossible to put down. The plot captures Corrie's struggles and triumphs, and is an amazing read for people over thirteen years.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

This is a book about a slave whose name is Frederick Douglass who goes through multiple slave holders, horrors of slavery, and tries to figure out if learning to read as a slave is a blessing or a curse. It's a long journey that is hard, tough, and challenging, but good.

In Shock: My Journey from Death to Recovery and the Redemptive Power of Hope by Dr. Rana Awdish

A real life experience of Dr. Rana Awdish who was attacked by HELLP syndrome when she was pregnant. Dr. Awdish talks about more than just facts; she incorporates her emotions throughout her experience. She also emphasizes on making crucial decisions during tough difficult times. (She was a guest speaker in one of my medical science events. She uses pathos throughout her book that move the readers.)

Minecraft: Redstone Handbook by Nick Farwell

10/10 dentists recommend using redstone to strengthen your potions but 11/10 recommend using it for traps. Very good + nostalgic.

The States and Their Symbols series by various authors

This series is a wonderful way to learn a lot of facts about the United States. It has a page for the state bird, state tree, and even super helpful facts, like the population and most populated city. It also points out good places to visit. These books have helped me learn a lot.

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

It was a true story and it was good.

Missing Mazda RX-7 Racer Found 35 Years After Running in Le Mans (article on jalopnik.com)

Very compelling-to-read article written with an interactive, hooking style constantly wanting the reader to keep reading. It details the history of Mazda's legendary rotary history with racing, & this race spec RX-7 with an unimaginably vivid widebody kit is an amazing piece of history.

The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth by Alexandra Robbins

It had a lot to do with the real world. I could relate to it since I'm in high school and the book revolves around high school kids.

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb

It was a good book and it was a true story.

Boy Erased by Garrard Conley

A memoir about a boy named Garrard's childhood and young adulthood going through gay conversion therapy. The book is a look into his and many others' experience. I love this book, but you want to bring tissues.

Dieselgate Scandal of Volkswagen (article on carbuzz.com)

It was an interesting story about what VW did in order to avoid getting fined by the EPA and EU governmental agencies. This was an update to the scandal, when 60,000 Macans and Cayennes were recalled.

The Nazi Hunters by Neal Bascomb

The Nazi Hunters is a book about the hunting of Nazis. Stories about hunting down Nazis and Von Stauffenberg. Von Staffenberg is an assassin who tried to assassinate Hitler.

Class Matters by correspondents of the New York Times

If you really want to be bored, read this book.  Lots of symbolism and hidden messages, not really my thing.  Had to read it for an honors class; it was even harder to write a paper on.  Please, I really wouldn't read this if you're a teen.  Maybe when you're older (then I think one would enjoy it).

Here's How Mazda Built its Rotary Engine (article) by Raphael Orlove

This was a very interesting article, because I didn't know a lot about rotary engines beforehand, and this gives insight into Mazda's innovation and how they were able to apply that tech to their sometimes very fuel-efficient vehicles, or extremely powerful vehicles that dominated the import JDM racing scene and gave way to a revolution.  The author, Raphael Orlove, is able to find a way to convey the message and information of rotary engines in a fun and descriptive way.
